India Launches Semiconductor Mission, Dholera Highlighted as Potential Fab Site
NEW DELHI: In December 2021, the Government of India launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), allocating ₹76,000 crore to strengthen semiconductor and display manufacturing across the nation. As part of this initiative, the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in Gujarat has emerged as a promising site for establishing semiconductor fabrication units, supported by its modern infrastructure and planned industrial layout.
The region offers extensive contiguous land parcels, consistent power availability, and efficient connectivity, strengthened by its integration with the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and access to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), making it a strategic choice for semiconductor manufacturing facilities.
The India Semiconductor Mission also complements the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative, fostering a favorable investment environment that attracts both global technology leaders and domestic semiconductor companies to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities within the country.
This mission is a significant step in positioning India as a global center for high-value electronics manufacturing while reducing its dependency on semiconductor imports and building a robust domestic supply chain ecosystem. It aims to encourage the development of fabrication plants, which will support India’s rapidly expanding electronics, automotive, and telecommunications sectors while creating high-skilled job opportunities.
The initiative is aligned with India’s long-term vision of becoming a technology-driven economy, enabling the country to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor landscape.
