AHMEDABAD: With the successful opening of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, focus has now shifted to the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in Gujarat while supporting the development of India’s first greenfield smart city in Dholera.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, inaugurated on November 26, covers 109 km in its first phase and is expected to reduce congestion at Ahmedabad Airport while linking India’s major road and rail networks. The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, set to be completed by January 2024, is envisioned as the country’s first high-speed multimodal corridor, seamlessly integrating road, rail, metro, and airport connectivity with the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).

Dholera, once a quiet village, has evolved into a key node of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), attracting significant investor interest due to its strategic location and planned infrastructure. Additionally, a new state-of-the-art airport is under construction around 80 km from Ahmedabad, which will further reduce pressure on the existing airport.

Alongside the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, the nearly 1,220 km Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is also under development, positioning itself as India’s second-longest expressway and linking major economic hubs across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

According to infrastructure experts, India’s ambition to maintain high economic growth is closely tied to advancing its infrastructure capabilities. The National Highway Authority of India’s efforts on projects like the Delhi-Mumbai and Ahmedabad-Dholera expressways are seen as critical steps in aligning with these growth aspirations while addressing the infrastructure gaps highlighted in reports by global analysts like S&P Global.
