DHOLERA: In a landmark decision for Gujarat’s industrial growth, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) officially granted environmental clearance to the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) on August 30, 2011. This approval marks a significant milestone in India's progress toward building sustainable smart cities.

The clearance was granted after detailed evaluation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, which analyzed the ecological implications of development across 920 square kilometers of land earmarked for Dholera. The comprehensive report covered aspects such as land use, water management, air quality, waste systems, and biodiversity conservation.

With this green nod, key infrastructure projects—including road constructionstormwater drainagesewage systems, and water treatment facilities—can now proceed without legal obstruction. The decision has greatly increased investor confidence, especially among international players who were previously awaiting environmental validation before committing capital.

This clearance not only enables physical development but also mandates adherence to environmental safeguards, including waste control mechanisms and water resource management. It reflects the government's vision to balance economic development with ecological responsibility, ensuring Dholera’s evolution into a sustainable, future-ready city.

The MoEF's approval is a critical enabler for industrialization, smart infrastructure rollout, and the start of large-scale construction activities in Dholera. As a result, Gujarat has taken another decisive step toward realizing its goal of becoming a hub for greenfield industrial townships under the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) framework.
