Gujarat: Sanand and Dholera Semiconductor Plants to Begin Chip Production by 2024 and 2026
GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat is poised to enter semiconductor chip production, with Sanand’s fabrication facility expected to begin operations by December 2024, followed by Dholera’s advanced manufacturing unit starting chip production by December 2026.
The announcement came during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Tata-Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, highlighting India’s commitment to building a strong domestic semiconductor ecosystem and reducing reliance on imports.
These initiatives are part of ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’, under which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for three semiconductor plants—two in Gujarat and one in Assam. The projects align with India’s ₹76,000 crore semiconductor and display manufacturing scheme, aimed at boosting the nation’s technological capabilities.
The Tata Electronics and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) facility in Dholera will receive an investment of ₹91,000 crore, positioning it as a flagship driver for industrial and technological development in the region. In parallel, CG Power, in collaboration with Renesas Electronics (Japan) and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand), will develop a facility in Sanand with an investment of ₹7,600 crore.
Additionally, Micron Technology’s plant in Sanand is progressing rapidly, aiming to begin operations by late 2024 with a USD 2.5 billion (₹22,500 crore) investment. Collectively, these semiconductor projects are expected to generate 20,000 direct high-tech jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs, supporting India’s growth in the electronics, automotive, and telecom sectors while advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
