DHOLERA, MID‑2011:

In a significant development, government officials and planning authorities have officially presented Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) as India’s most expansive smart city initiative to date.Covering a vast area of 920 square kilometers, Dholera SIR exceeds the land size of Singapore, emphasizing its massive scale and strategic significance in India’s urban development landscape.

This greenfield city is being positioned as a model for next-generation urbanization in India, incorporating advanced planning principles, high-efficiency infrastructure, and smart governance. Authorities outlined the zone's unique multi-use ecosystem—comprising industrial corridors, residential hubs, renewable energy parks, logistics nodes, and social amenities—designed to operate in a plug-and-play format for investors and businesses.

The announcement, made through a series of planning updates and public bulletins, emphasized Dholera’s intended role as a national blueprint for smart cities, with adaptable frameworks for rapid deployment of infrastructure, real-time governance systems, and environmental sustainability.

This initiative is backed by strategic policy support, with integration into the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), and aims to generate massive employment opportunities, catalyze industrial investments, and promote sustainable urban development. Authorities believe this development will not only transform Gujarat’s economic landscape but also influence smart city planning across India.

The Dholera SIR plan includes dedicated transportation zones, IT connectivity, waste recycling systems, and renewable energy integration, creating a futuristic urban ecosystem. As per official statements, the goal is to make Dholera a live demonstration of scalable and sustainable urbanism for the country.
